I will never say that I'm an avid reader but I do have a nice collection of reading books that I've collected over the past twenty years or so. The majority of them are current affairs and autobiographies. These types of books really keep my attention and that makes it hard for me to put them down even when I know there's something else I should be doing at the moment. One of which is the autobiography of Malcolm X (as told to Alex Haley). I bought it two weeks before Spike Lee's movie X came out. I was determined to get it done before I saw the movie. And I did. This was almost a day and night non-stop reader. I am so intrigued by the information I was receiving that I did not want to put it down. I took it to work and read as much as I could on my breaks and on my lunch break. The book was simply well put together and I can say that it's the best book I ever read. It's hands down my favorite book!
There's just something about reading an autobiography on someone I like or may find interesting. I like reading about their upbringing, their passions and their victories and defeats. It makes me see them not as a celebrity or public icon but as a person just like you and I. There's several people I'd love to up on but haven't gotten around to doing so as of yet. My plan is to have a huge library of them one day. The next obstacle would be finding the time to read them all.
My love for current affairs is a bit stronger than my love for autobiographies. When something happens and becomes a top story in the news, if it's interesting enough; I'm going to follow and pay close attention to it. Let's say it was a court case of somewhat; by time it plays out and I kept up with it on the news, there's a strong possibility that I'll buy the book when someone comes out with one. With a book; you then get the inside scoops of all the things you didn't hear about on the news. The story at this point really becomes informative and interesting. That's the making of a book that's hard to put down.
I can flip through a good well written book hours at a time. It's very relaxing flipping through the pages. I'm not to the new error of reading such as reading books online. Before too long my eyes begin to get tire and start to water. And that's never a good feeling.
I really need to slow down with some of the other things I've been doing as of late and start reading again. I could use a break and enjoy the peace and calm a good book has to offer.
